Under clear skies and in front of an enthralled crowd, Saturday's inaugural Monster Energy MXGP of the Americas at The Dirt Track at Charlotte showcased four wheel-to-wheel races that saw MXGP rookie Tim Gajser and MX2 points leader Jeffrey Herlings clinch their respective world championships after an action-packed day of racing on Charlotte's first-of-its-kind, one-mile SuperCourse.
The highly anticipated America-versus-Europe battle met with an exciting crescendo, as Morehead City, North Carolina, native and Yamaha rider Cooper Webb used a runner-up finish in MX2 Moto 1 and a breathtaking ride from 10th to first in Moto 2 to capture the overall MX2 victory over Herlings and another American, Austin Forkner. Monster Energy Kawasaki rider and Colorado native Eli Tomac bested the MXGP field by 22 seconds in Moto 1. He proved his dominance was no fluke when he beat Gajser by a five-second margin in Moto 2.
The United States riders' victories came as no surprise to Webb, a Factory Yamaha signee who made his final start on a 250cc bike a rousing success in front of his home fans.
"It was a really cool experience to have the crowd behind me," Webb said. "I could hear the crowd every time I went by. It was definitely a special moment with it being my last race on a 250."
Tomac controlled both MXGP motos in impressive fashion against unfamiliar adversaries.
"It was a great day," Tomac said. "It really started well with practice. It was a tough track to stay up on ... I had a lot of fun. We're racing the same guys 30 other weekends out of the year, so it's fun to race against some new competition."
